Counter Offers, Early Offers and Multiple Offers
Counter Offers
This is when your current employer tries to get you to stay with a combination of:- A salary increase
- Additional benefits
- A new title
- A promotion or change in role
- Possible future involvement in exciting projects
You may well feel flattered, confused and lacking in loyalty but the facts are that:
More than 90% of people who accept counter offers leave within 6 months as their reasons for leaving did not fundamentally change. Why are you being counter offered?
- It is expensive to replace an employee
- It is time consuming to find someone
- It usually takes 6 months to bring someone up to speed in a new job
- It might mess up their budget
- There may be a recruitment freeze , so you can not be replaced
- They may have to find cover while they recruit your replacement
- A project or piece of work may be disrupted
The counter offer is for the company's benefit, not yours.
If you stay, consider the following:- Will your loyalty now be questionable
- How will it affect future promotions
- Your boss may well start looking for your replacement anyway
- Why did they not value you enough to give you what you wanted before you resigned?
- Have the fundamental reasons for changing been satisfied
- Why are you not putting yourself first
- If the company restructured or was in trouble, would they think twice about letting you go?
Early Offers
When you register with Resourcing Associates we take time and trouble to find and put you forward for the right job to match your skills, experience and ambition. This means that sometimes you may get interviews and an offer very quickly. This can be very unsettling and throw up questions such as:
- Have I moved too fast?
- Have I undervalued myself?
- If I wait, is there something better out there?
If this does happen - don't worry, you are very lucky to be in this situation.
What we offer at Resourcing Associates for all our candidates is the chance to sit down with a consultant and compare the offer against their original reasons for moving. We are happy to be used as a sounding board. We never charge for this, we just want you to make the right move. After all you don't change jobs very often.
Multiple Offers
When you begin your job search you may find that two or three opportunities run their course at the same time. If you are lucky you may get more than one offer at once. Choosing between them can be very difficult. There is no such thing as the perfect job; they will all have pros and cons
If this happens don't worry.
At Resourcing Associates we are used to this. Come in and sit down with a consultant and compare what you've been offered against your original criteria. Remember too that we have spent time getting to know the companies that have interviewed you and have often met the team as well as your future boss. Use our knowledge to help you make your decision and ask as many questions as you need to. We want you to make the right move and when you come to recruit your future team we want you to remember us and use us to find the right people for you too!
